Summary:

Der Architekt Alfred Messel (1853-1909) gehört zu den bedeutendsten visionären der modernen Grossstadtarchitektur. Zu seinem 100. Todestag wird sein Werk mit rund 350 Exponaten in einer umfassenden Ausstellung der Kunstbibliothek präsentiert. Die Ausstellung und das Katalogbuch entstehen in Kooperation mit dem Architekturmuseum der Technischen Universität Berlin. Alfred Messel schuf stilprägende Bauten zwischen Historismus und Moderne. Er baute Museen, Finanzpaläste, Schulen, Brücken, grossbürgerliche Villen sowie Reformwohnungsbauten. Sein Schaffens spektrum reicht vom Warenhaus Wertheim am Potsdamer Platz, dem damals grössten Warenhaus Europas, bis hin zum Pergamon-Museum, seinem letzten geplanten Bau, das seit 1999 Teil des Weltkulturerbes ist.
