Hodges, Richard.
Visions of Rome : Thomas Ashby, archaeologist / by Richard Hodges.
London : British School at Rome, at the British Academy, 2000.
xv, 134 pages : illustrations, map ; 25 cm
"On Friday 15 May 1931, on his way from Southampton to Oxford, Thomas Ashby fell from the train and died. An open verdict on his death was recorded by the coroner but, as Richard Hodges shows, he had plenty enough motive to end his life. Ashby, an avid photographer and dedicated walker, belonged to the transition between Victorian antiquarianism and twentieth-century scientific archaeology. This volume charts his educational and archaeological background, his first acquaintance with Rome and the Roman Campagna, his time at the British School at Rome (as the School's first Scholar and third Director (1906-25) and his experiences with the First British Red Cross Ambulance Unit during the First World War. It describes Ashby's academic achievements, not only as an archaeologist but also as an art historian."--Cover.
