Summary:

This collection was apparently brought together by Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (1517-1586) and bound in one volume by his brother Frederic Perrenot, Lord of Champagney (circa 1530-1595). Antoine, like his father Nicolas, whom he succeeded as Prime Minister to Charles V, was a statesman of great power and influence. When barely 23 years old, he became bishop of Arras and was soon entrusted with diplomatic missions, becoming intimately acquainted with European politics. In 1550, he succeeded his father in the office of Secretary of State and became a close adviser to Charles V. On the abdication of the Emperor, he transferred his services to Charles' successor, Philip II of Spain and became employed in the Netherlands; later he was Prime Minister to Margaret of Parma. He was named Archbishop of Malines and became a Cardinal. The growing hostility of people in The Netherlands forced him to retire from public office for a time, but in 1570 he resumed diplomatic missions for Phillip II and then went to Italy to become Viceroy of Naples. Granvelle was a brilliant diplomat as well as a man of great culture, taking an interest in the printing house of Plantin, and as shown by the present volume, collecting graphic art. The Albertina in Vienna owns a volume of drawings by Durer that came from his possession. These architectural engravings reflect his interest in contemporary architecture, including the plans and battle scenes that mirror contemporary events he was involved in as a diplomat. Many items in this volume are of interest for the modern collector because of their rarity. The volume was owned later by Hippolyte Destailleur (1822-1893), architect, celebrated collector, and historian of ornamental art. It was Destailleur who entered a list of the contents in pencil on the front paste-down and numbered the individual leaves
