Summary:

Surveys the history of eleven Jewish communities and their synagogues in the region of Steinfurt, a district situated in North Rhine-Westphalia, in the 18th-20th centuries: Hopsten, Horstmar, Ibbenbüren, Laer, Lengerich, Metelen, Ochtrup, Rheine, Steinfurt-Borghorst, Steinfurt-Burgsteinfurt, and Westerkappeln. The Metelen community belonged to the Ochtrup synagogue from the 19th century on. The synagogue in Westerkappeln was sold and demolished in 1929-30, and that in Laer was sold in April 1938 as it had no longer been in use. In the chapters on the other towns, relates how the synagogues were damaged or demolished during the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. Pp. 110-134 contain facsimiles of documents and newspaper accounts of events during the Nazi period.
