Summary:

This book is the first of a series of systematic studies dedicated to the patrimonial and cultural legacy of the Jesuit and Franciscan missionary orders in the northern Nueva Vizcaya region of colonial Mexico, particularly in what is now the state of Durango. For more than a century these missionaries developed a great activity amongst the local Indians establishing "Pueblos de Misión" where they were not only to evangelize but to impose the Spanish institutions upon the natives. Their arduous ad extensive labor resulted in the production of numerous tangible and intangible manifestations that still persist today: buildings, devotional objects, festivities and settlement patterns, amongst others. The present volume comprises four essays that account for the social history, the art, architecture and ethnography of the region.
