Travel account by the count de Forbin of a journey to the Middle East undertaken in 1817 and 1818. As the newly-appointed director of museums for France, Forbin set off on a year-long trip to Asia Minor, Palestine, and Egypt commissioned with acquiring antiquities for the Louvre. Forbin's account (also published separately as an octavo volume) is accompanied by 80 numbered plates: 70 are lithographs by Godefroy Englemann after such artist as Hippolyte Lecomte, Constant Bourgeois, Louis Hersent, Alphonse de Seynes, Carle Vernet, and Jean Lubin Vauzelle; 2 are engravings by Nicolas Auguste Leisnier of plans of the Catacomb de Milo and cross-section of one of the pyramids at Giza, and church of the Sepulchre in Jerusalem; and 8 are sepia aquatints executed by Philibert-Louis Debucourt of scenes by A. Forbin. According to Leonora Navari, Greece and the Levant : the catalogue of the Henry Myron Blackmer collection of books and manuscripts, ""Forbin's was one of the first important French books to use lithography on a grand scale, and the standard of production is equal to that of Napoléon's 'Description de l'Egypte' or Denon's 'Voyage." Plates depict landscape views, buildings, mosques, ruins, local scenes, and costumes.
