Summary:

"Scenes of New York life are juxtaposed with the filmmaker's voiceover of letters from her mother. 'My dearest little girl'--and gossipy bits of fights, divorces, pregnancies, and graduations follow. Typically maternal, the letters reveal much drama over small events while placid faces jostle through their urban American day. 'Don't go out alone at night'--through the restaurant window the hand pours sugar into the coffee cup--' ... it is very social. The world is so sad. Write, especially if you are doing well. Your mother who loves you.' The film, like the life it depicts, is without plot, and relies heavily on Akerman's ability to reveal through subtle detail. Babette Mangolte's cinematography conveys compassion for the human spirit moving through its daily life."--Container.
