Summary:

Part 1 of the treatise contains Books I-III; Part 2 contains VI-VIII. Book I: Introduces the concept and origin of Architecture, the principles of geometry and its relations with the human body, drawing and various typologies of buildings. Finally, it covers the fall of the Roman Empire and its Architecture, land surveying and construction sites. Book II: Describes the climate differences per region and how to choose a site and buildings in relation to the site. It covers principles of urban planning, hydraulics, meteorology and the art of erecting fortifications to defend cities. Book III: Depicts the original form of the houses of ancient Greeks and Romans, the appearance of Italian, Spanish, French and German palaces, and details of his later projects. Also how to normalize plans and facades located on irregular lots, design the exteriors and interiors of villas and their gardens. Book VI: Deals with the orders in Architecture, defining ornaments, pedestals and frontispieces. It describes each of the five Orders, the people who created them, the appearance of colonnades and arches, and finally their proportions with explanatory tables. Book VII: Covers building materials and the common types of marble and bricks used. How to install stone, lime, and sand, as well as the qualities of wood and metals. Book VIII: Defines the parts of a building, and describes different types of land and foundations. Ancient and modern wall elements such as stairs, doors, and windows, construction techniques used on roofs and bridges, and finally the construction of parks, sewers, and both public and private roads.
