Die Wohnungsnot wurde nach 1918 zu einem zentralen Politikthema. Der soziale Massenwohnungsbau wurde damit zur Grundlage neuer Ansätze im Städtebau und der Stadterweiterung. In Halle entstanden so 1918-1933 über 9.300 staatlich geförderte Wohneinheiten in neuen Stadtteilen, Siedlungen und Wohnanlagen - bis heute prägende Zeugnisse einer wichtigen Periode deutscher Architektur- und Sozialgeschichte.
