Summary:

Die umwälzenden Ereignisse im 15. Jahrhundert, die eng mit der veränderten Kriegsführung zusammenhingen, haben sich mehr als bisher wahrgenommen auf die Architektursprache des 16. Jahrhunderts ausgewirkt. An ausgewählten Torbauten, den neuralgischen Punkten moderner Festungsanlagen, wird die Herausbildung neuer architektonischer Ausdrucksformen exemplarisch dargestellt. Durch die Verbreitung der italienischen Manier bis in den nordalpinen Raum konnte sich dieser im Festungsbau erprobte neue Militärstil als eine Art internationaler Stil etablieren, der schliesslich auch gezielt in der architettura civile eingesetzt wurde und die Architektursprache der Frühen Neuzeit nachhaltig prägte.
