Summary:

Paris - with a population of 200,000 in 1300 - was the largest city in the medieval West. During the 13th century, it became the capital of the powerful Kingdom of France, drawing a steady stream of intellectuals, business people, and artists. The city's unprecedented growth left an enduring mark. In many neighborhoods, the current street layout reflects the subdivision projects that accommodated the newcomers who arrived during the Middle Ages. While few medieval buildings remain visible today in a near-complete state - such as Notre-Dame or the Sainte-Chapelle - many survive in fragmentary form, including Philip Augustus's Louvre, the "Salle des Gens d'Armes" at the Conciergerie, and the refectory of the Cordeliers convent. These remnants - and many others - dot the urban fabric, the changing appearance of which over the course of a millennium is captured in historical images. Between the "ideal city" envisioned by kings and the teeming metropolis of houses packed tightly together along narrow, foul-smelling alleys, the true face of medieval Paris emerges.--Adapted from computer translation (from French, on internet) from publisher's subject information for 2024 edition.
