Date of imprint is taken from a Charles Wood catalogue, as is the attribution of some of the photographs to Charles Marville; according to a letter from Marie de Thézy, author of "Marville Paris" (1994), the photographic images which she has attributed to Marville correspond to negatives with his official stamp; other images cannot be attributed to Marville with absolute certainty, however it is known that at least 21 views of the Opera have been attributed to him. Summary:

Photographs document the architecture, sculpture, ornamental details and interiors of the newly built Paris Opera House designed by Charles Garnier. More than a third of the images depict the exterior "façade principale," the stairhall ("grand escalier"), and the subscriber vestibule ("Pavillon des Abonnés"). A table of contents lists seven other aspects. One photo shows the grand foyer under construction with scaffolding.
