The publication provides an unprecedented survey of art and architecture of the convent and church of Santo Antonio and the church of St. Francis of Penance of Rio de Janeiro, also showing how the installation of the Franciscans in the current Largo da Carioca influenced the transformation of the city. The book presents the most comprehensive inventory of history, art, and architecture of this important constructive complex, which includes, besides the monastery, the oldest church in Rio de Janeiro (the Santo Antonio) and the most complete Baroque church in the country (the Third Order of St. Francis of Penance). And thus reveals how the installation of the Franciscans on the hill of St. Anthony in the early years of the seventeenth century, influenced the transformation of the city.
