Summary:

This miniature set of building blocks typifies a trend which began in the 1920s for toys which were plain, strong, functional, and open-ended in use. By the mid-nineteenth century, toy blocks had undergone many variations, and by the end of the century and in the first decades of the new, had in some cases become, like many other toys, rather complicated. This cheerful little set however, while comprising simple cones and cubes in a few basic colours, can be used to represent or suggest many kinds of structures or even a whole village.
The set has no visible trade mark or manufacturer's name, a practice common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when manufacturers sold toys through jobbers who protected themselves by prohibiting the appearance of the firm's name and address on the toy. In Europe this practice had led to the appearance of often cryptic trade marks or initials on toys; the practice gradually disappeared after 1900.
