This thesis examines the revolutionary neues Bauen (New Architecture) that Frankfurter Stadtbaurat (Frankfurt Municipal Planner) Ernst May designed in Weimar-era Frankfurt. I focus in particular on May's consideration of the work of women, especially the neue Frau (New Woman), into his design, as well as Grete Schütte-Lihotzky's Frankfurter Küche (Frankfurt Kitchen), which was often built into these modern homes. In my analysis of images of these spaces, I look primarily at those published in May's monthly periodical, Das neue Frankfurt; I closely study visual linkages of neues Bauen and the neue Frau, which, I argue, emerge in fashion photography. I address all of these issues through a lens of reform and ultimately consider whether May's neues Bauen designs directed interwar women to function as vessels of tradition or as emblems of modernity.
