Waarom komt de typische gotische kathedraal alleen in West-Europa voor en niet in de omgeving van Rome? Marinus Gout stelt dat de synthese tussen christendom en neoplatonisme van duidelijke invloed is geweest op het ontwerp en de uitvoering van West-Europese gotische kathedralen. Het conflict rondom de heilige drie-eenheid in de Middeleeuwen is waar te nemen in de kathedralenbouw. 'Symboliek in de kathedralenbouw' geeft een analyse van de bouw en de vormentaal van gotische kathedralen in West-Europa. Gout onderzoekt in het bijzonder de invloed van de technische kennis en de symbolische verwerking die voortkwam uit de verbinding tussen christendom en neoplatonisme. Ontwerp en uitvoering van de West-Europese gotische kathedralen waren hierdoor nauw verbonden met de getallensymboliek van het pythagorisme. Helaas is deze vormentaal na de Middeleeuwen grotendeels verloren gegaan. Het lezen van de in steen en gebrandschilderd glas uitgebeelde boodschap is nu niet meer zo eenvoudig. Gour neemt de lezer mee terug in de tijd.
