Summary:

Art historican George Kubler analyzes and classifies the architecture of the mission churches built by Spanish friars in seventheenth-century New Mexico. Although the friars based their designs on the European building styles of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, they had to adapt these traditions to their new environment and available materials. These and the influence of their indigenous workmen resulted in a blend of European baroque and local traditions.
