Summary:

"Amsterdam beleefde in de zeventiende eeuw een economisch hoogtepunt dat nooit meer is geëvenaard. De stad groeide tot 200.000 inwoners. Deze constante aanwas van mensen leidde tot grote stadsuitbreidingen in 1613 en in 1663, waardoor uiteindelijk de beroemde grachtengordel tot stand is gekomen. Eén van de architecten van buiten Amsterdam die zich hier vestigde, was Adriaan Dortsman. Onder kunsthistorici staat Dortsman bekend als één van de belangrijkste architecten van de zogenaamde Strakke Stijl (ca. 1660-1710), waarin het gebruik van klassieke orden tot een minimum werd beperkt. Dortsman is hiermee beeldbepalend geweest voor de architectuur aan de Amsterdamse grachten met ontwerpen als de Ronde Lutherse Kerk (Koepelzaal Renaissance Hotel), het Walenweeshuis (Maison Descartes) en de tweelingpanden Keizersgracht 672-674 (Museum van Loon)."--Page 4 of cover.
