Het fantasierijke oeuvre van architect Sybold van Ravesteyn (1889-1983) is atypisch voor de twintigste-eeuwse architectuur in Nederland in stijl en grilligheid. De rijk geïllustreerde publicatie Sybold van Ravesteyn. Architect over de onorthodoxe heer en 'kameleon uit overtuiging' Sybold van Ravesteyn, werkzaam voor zowel de spoorwegen als particuliere opdrachtgevers, is een pakkende biografie van een unieke architect, ontwerper van meubelen, typograaf en publicist. Na een korte flirt met de Amsterdamse School ontplooide Van Ravesteyn zich als inventief ontwerper in de Nieuw Zakelijke stijl. Uit verlangen naar grandeur en frivoliteit veranderde hij vanaf 1936 in een pleitbezorger van een nieuwe stijl, de Nederlandse neobarok, met ornament, toegepaste kunst en frivole meubelen. Na 1945 vervolgde hij zijn carrière in twee stijlen: één die aansluit bij het traditionalisme, gepredikt door de Delftse School, en de andere volgens het internationaal georiënteerde functionalisme.
