Summary:

The book presents the winning projects of the 17th edition of the Pan-American Biennial of Architecture of Quito, organized under the title "The Open Biennial", in relation to "the opening of a closed discipline". 467 participating projects competed around 5 main topics: society (either formal or informal), manifestations of the economy (rich or poor), nature (natural or artificial), culture (neither popular nor intellectual), and science (high or low). "In a world in crisis, architecture should be considered towards an open architecture, sensitive to its condition of support for the activities of life; a balanced and generous architecture with nature, extracting its force from the local conditions in the environment where it is inserted, that values public space and that will not wastes the values of the present." (Our translation) --Page 9.
