Summary:

"Social Infrastructure and Vulnerability in the Suburbs examines how the combination of the historically low-density, car-centric geography of outer suburbs and the entrenchment of neoliberal governance in the past several decades have affected disadvantaged populations in North American metropolitan areas. Taking the prime example of York Region, a large outer suburb north of Toronto, the authors analyse patterns of demographic change and vulnerability in the suburbs. The volume looks at use of and access to support services by vulnerable groups who are not traditionally associated with the suburbs: recent immigrants, seniors, and low-income families. Providing empirical evidence on four types of public infrastructure - education, employment, housing, and settlement services - this book also presents a range of policy recommendations on how to address the social inequalities that characterize these rapidly growing suburban areas."--1st preliminary page.
