Fondato a Parigi nel 1948 (e attivo fino al 1951), il gruppo CoBrA è considerato una pietra miliare dell'Espressionismo astratto europeo e svolse un ruolo importante per il superamento del contrasto figurazione-astrazione tipico di quegli anni. Il nome CoBrA, coniato nel 1948 dal pittore, teorico e poeta belga Christian Dotremont, è un acronimo formato dalle lettere iniziali delle capitali dei paesi di provenienza (Copenhagen, Bruxelles, Amsterdam) dei principali artisti del gruppo, tra cui il danese Asger Jorn, gli olandesi Karel Appel, Jan Nieuwenhuys, Constant e Corneille, e i poeti surrealisti belgi Christian Dotremont e Joseph Noiret.0Attraverso un'ampia e accurata raccolta di dipinti, sculture, lavori su carta, pubblicazioni, documenti, foto e filmati, il volume presenta l'arte e i protagonisti del gruppo CoBrA, la prima grande avanguardia di respiro internazionale del secondo dopoguerra.
