: These careful outline etchings of St Helen's, Sefton, Lancashire, are based, Bridgens informs us in his preface, on 'Measurements & c First Made As Studies During Several Years Residence In Liverpool' and present the state of the church as it was before 1818, 'Since Which Time the Author Has Been Informed That It Has Undergone Considerable Repairs And Some Alterations.' On these 'restorations' see W.D. Car{OCLCbr94}e's monograph, Sefton, a descriptive and historical account, London, 1893, pp. 15 ff. The idiosyncratic script used by Bridgens for the text and captions is modelled on the 'Bench End' alphabet found on one of the stalls in the church (see pl. XXIV). A reissue of these plates was published by John Weale in 1835.
