Publication:

Paris: Jean ..., 1832.

Description:

24 pages, 58 [i.e. 60] engr. plates ; 43.1 cm (2)̲

Notes:
Originally published in 1824. The present work is probably a reissue with the first gathering cancelled. The imprint of 'Casimir' appears on the verso of the title-leaf.
Signature: 2:̲ 1² 2-6². [12 leaves] $1 signed.
: The identity of 'M. A. Paulin' is in some doubt. He signs plate 1 bis as 'Paulin Desormeaux', so must presumably be the same A.O. Paulin-Désormeaux who contributed manuals on trelliswork, armoury, rubberwork, cooperage and locksmithing to the Encyclopédie-Roret between 1836 and 1854 (see No. 321 and the BM. Gen. Cat.). The same individual was also the author of L'art du tourneur, published in three volumes in Paris in 1824, and translated into German in 1836 (see UCBA p.412; BM. Gen. Cat.). The present work is uncommon, with no copy recorded at the British Library, Soane Museum, Royal Academy, Bodleian or Cambridge, and few copies traced in the standard reference sources. The Bibliothèque Nationale and the Avery Library both possess a copy of the first edition, dated 1824. The construction of the volume appears to be identical, and it is probable that the present form of the work represents a second issue, with the first gathering cancelled (in the BAL copy gathering A is printed on a very different paper from the remainder of the text). The Avery Cat. and the NUC also record an undated edition, with only 15 pages of text, published by Marie et Bernard, probably in the 1840s. Quèrard, and its continuation, list only the 1824 edition, noting that it was published at 15 francs. Neither Quèrard, nor the BN. Livres imprimés, attribute the work to A.O. Paulin-Désormeaux, giving the author only as 'A. Paulin'.
Every page of text, including the titlepage, is set within a thick-thin rule border. There is a woodcut ornament on the titlepage.
