: In the introduction to this, probably Quatremère de Quincy's most influential architectural work, the author draws attention to a 'nouvel édition du Traité de l'Art de bâtir, par Rondelet', to which he refers questions of practical building (see No. 2838). Rondelet's text had grown out of an article he had written for the Encyclopédie méthodique, and the present text owes a great deal to Quatremère de Quincy's own writings for the same work (his 'Dictionnaire d'architecture' for the Encyclopédie had appeared in three volumes in 1788, 1801-1820 and 1825; see the Notes to No. 987). It is also a natural extension of the Histoire de la vie et des oeuvres des plus célèbres architectes of 1830. However, the text is much more than a list of terms and historical facts, and includes a great deal of theorising and controversial opinion. An Italian translation by A. Marinardi was published in two volumes as Dizionario storico di architettura (Mantova: 1842-1844).
The wood-engraved device on the titlepages shows a Doric capital surrounded by symbols of architecture (it is re-used as a tail-piece on 62{SN}4{SF}a). There are wood-engraved head-pieces in volume I on {OCLCbrCB}3a and 1{SN}1{SF}a and in volume II on 1{SN}1{SF}a. Wood-engraved tail-pieces appear in volume I on {OCLCbrCB}4b, 17{SN}4{SF}a and 82{SN}1{SF}b (signed 'Du Rouchail' and repeated in volume II on 44{SN}1{SF}a, 64{SN}1{SF}a, 79{SN}4{SF}b, 90{SN}3{SF}a), and in volume II on 6{SN}2{SF}a (repeated 44{SN}2{SF}b), 18{SN}4{SF}a and 20{SN}3{SF}a. Typographical tail-pieces appear on 88{SN}2{SF}b in volume I and 6{SN}1{SF}b and 90{SN}3{SF}b in volume II.
