: A manuscript note (probably of 1838) by John Goldicutt, attached to the front endleaf of the BAL copy, reads in part 'Chevalier Leon Vendramini ... He studied at Florence and now at the early age of twenty four is appointed architect to His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of Russia, and is now employed in the rebuilding of the Palace lately Burnt.' This refers to the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, which was gutted by fire in 1837, although the bulk of the rebuilding work was undertaken by Vasily Stasov and Alexander Bryullov, suggesting that Vendramini's r{OCLCbr93}le was peripheral or junior (see Dictionary of art XXVII, p.585). It is probable that he was a relative of the engravers Giovanni (1769-1839) and Francesco Vendramini (1780-1856), quite possibly the son of the latter, who emigrated to Saint Petersburg in 1808 (see Thieme-Becker). The text of the present work is a brief overview of the history of architecture in Europe; the tone and length of the piece, and the youth of the author, suggest that it may have been expanded from an essay written while Vendramini was studying in Florence.
The titlepage and dedication are set in a variety of Didone, black letter and script typefaces.
