Zahlreiche namhafte Künstler widmeten sich dieser gestalterischen Aufgabe und schufen prächtige Kleinarchitekturen, die monumentale Ausmasse annehmen konnten und in komplexen formalen und inhaltlichen Bezügen zum Kirchenraum standen. Die Studie erforscht erstmals ihre Entstehung und Verbreitung, Gestaltung und Symbolik im 16. und frühen 17. Jahrhundert.
