Der Architekt Otto Bartning (1883-1959) prägte durch seine Bauten und Projekte, Reden und Schriften über fünf Jahrzehnte die Baukultur in Deutschland. Als Protagonist der Moderne war er ab 1919 massgeblich am Neuen Bauen in der Weimarer Republik beteiligt, nach 1945 am Aufbau der Städte in der jungen Demokratie der Bundesrepublik. In diesem Buch werden erstmals die sozialen Intentionen und die Vielfalt des Lebenswerks eines Architekten dokumentiert, der bisher vor allem durch den Bau evangelischer Kirchen internationale Anerkennung gefunden hat.
