Forget revolution – it’s time for reform. Forget revolution – it’s time for reform. As the authors of this essay collection argue, sometimes the most effective path to meaningful change is to work within existing institutions and slowly, surely, push for it. This is all the more relevant for architecture, which by definition is entrenched in larger social, economic, and political contexts. Four essays on diverse topics like urban planning policy in Mumbai, unconventional city forms in Detroit, municipal housing in Diyarbakir (Turkey), and collaborative design processes in Tirana (Albania) attempt to challenge and shift the way we understand and implement reform in the design disciplines.

Summary:
For Voir la mer, Sophie Calle invited inhabitants of Istanbul, who often originated from central Turkey, to see the sea for the first time. "I took 15 people of all ages, from kids to one man in his 80s once we were safely by the sea, I instructed them to take away their hands and look at it. Then, when they were ready--for some it was five minutes and for others 15--they(...)

Then, when they were ready--for some it was five minutes and for others 15--they had to turn to me and let me look at those eyes that had just seen the sea." The project was eventually composed of 14 five-minute videos, made for Calle by Caroline Champetier. Each person is filmed from behind, eventually turning to face the camera, revealing the emotions the experience has evoked.

Summary:
One of art history's previously overlooked treasures--the vibrant ceramic tiles of Syria and especially Damascus-are the subject of this study by a leading Islamic art expert. Architectural ceramic decoration is one of the most celebrated manifestations of the arts of Islam. Spanning a period from the 13th to the 20th century, the tiles featured in this book exhibit a rich range of influences from Persia, Turkey, China and even Europe. A renowned specialist in the fields of Islamic and Indian art, Arthur Millner explores the historical context that allowed the uniquely creative achievement of Syrian craftsmen to flourish, and why tiles from this region are less restricted in artistic expression than those from better-known centers of production.

Summary:
In an era of unprecedented mobility, people can now live and work not only in different places, but even in different countries. Binational Urbanism examines the lifestyle of these people who start a second life in a second city, in a second country, without saying goodbye to their first city. In a uniquely 21st-century diaspora, they live in constant transit between two homes and two nations. "Binational urbanists" come from all strata of society, from the working class to the highly educated and cosmopolitan creative classes. For this volume, German architect Bernd Upmeyer interviewed people of Turkish origin living in Germany who commute regularly between cities in Germany and Turkey. From these interviews the author develops a theory of binational urbanism, concluding that it has the potential to become one of the most interesting forms of life in the 21st century.
