- The architect's project files have been reorganized into two groupings totalling 205 files. General files are organized by document type and construction files are organized according to five building phases: the chapel proper, unit I of construction, 1952-1952; the campanile, berm walls and walks, unit II of construction, 1953-1955; the parish house, cloister and refectory, unit III of construction, 1955-1957; the work shed and yard, also known as the service building addition, unit IV of construction, 1957-1958; and a final group of smaller projects -- restrooms, baptismal fount and auditorium addition -- executed between 1960 and 1977. A copy of the finding aid is in the object file; it includes a description of the current contents of each file and of their organization as received.

Description:
Series I consists of sketches, drawings and paintings, mostly created by Parizeau. From the period he spent in Europe (1923-1933), there are 11 student drawings in the standard presentation format of the École des Beaux-arts de Paris, a volume of course notes, as well as unidentified drawings, sketchbooks and paintings of primarily buildings and landscapes executed in Paris and during his travels in France. Drawings relating to Parizeau's architectural career in Montreal are represented in a number of independant projects, including a small chapel beside the St. Lawrence River, a pair of two-storey cabin-cottages outside of Montreal, and several residences in the city. The documents are mostly original preliminary studies with some reproductions of working drawings. It should be noted that there are also photographs of exterior details of the Laroque Residence and the Jarry Residence in documents CO2 in Series II. Reproductions of designs for worker housing by French architect Eugène Beaudoin in 1938 perhaps give a clue to Parizeau's relatively early employment of modernist forms. A residence in Baie D'Urfé is unlikely to be connected to Parizeau because its date, ca. 1955, is a decade after his death. Parizeau's concern with furniture and interior design is represented in the Archive with many lively perspective sketches in colour, and elevation and plan studies of several kinds of rooms and types of furniture. Some preliminary drawings for interiors were grouped with the Gillow house in Ville Mont-Royal, and the Walter Downs Residence in Montreal. The artworks by Parizeau consist of paintings and drawings of landscapes, buildings, still lifes and figure studies on loose sheets and in bound sketchbooks. These works are executed in a variety of media, including pencil, coloured pencil, watercolour on paper, and oil paint on masonite panels. Studies of buildings in Brittany and Paris are the subjects in three small sketchbooks, while larger spiral-bound drawing books contain some architectural plans, elevations and details. Most of these artworks and sketches were likely created in Europe before 1933.

Description:
File documents Inter-Action Centre, a completed project for a community centre commissioned by Ed Berman and the Inter-Action Trust, for a disused site at Talacre Public Open Space in Kentish Town, Camden, London. The construction was divided into two phases. Foundations, steel frame and trusses were constructed first and could be used for open-air community events while funds were being raised for the second phase. Phase II included cladding, fittings, finishes, services prefabricated units, and log cabins. The building was intended as a flexible short life-span building in which the interior spaces would be independent of the roof and exterior walls. Functional areas suggested by Cedric Price include: assembly halls, classrooms, rehearsal rooms, studios, areas for performance, media resources, lounging and dining, and a gym and a nursery. Cedric Price had been engaged by the concepts of flexible architecture, indeterminacy, impermanence, and the fusion of information technology, entertainment, and educational activities in earlier unrealized projects such as Fun Palace (AP144.S2.D46) and Oxford Corner House (AP144.S2.D59). Existing conditions drawings include photographs of the site; reprographic copies of electrical and drainage systems; ordinance surveys of Kentish Town; and landscape and playground layout. Conceptual drawings include sketches of overall massing; diagrammatic plans; drawings and diagrams of site conditions; notes for the structural framework; rendered interior elevations; plans showing impact of site context on building design; diagrammatic sketches of relationship between functional requirements and structural form. Schematic drawings include diagrammatic plans; sections of structural system and exterior wall; cladding details; and axonometric views of supports. Design development drawings and working drawings include plans, elevations, sections, details and axonometric views. Presentation drawings include watercolours and other renderings; reprographic copies, possibly for publication; and perspectives drawings. This project series documents the Edifício de Escritórios na Av. D. Afonso Henriques, in Porto, also referred to as Avenida da Ponte I. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 31/60. In the past the office identified the project as number 121. The office assigned the dates 1968-1974 for this project. The Edifício de Escritórios na Av. D. Afonso Henriques consisted of a building with offices, stores, and parking. Located on a historic site, the intention for the Edifício de Escritórios was to integrate the building into the existing urban landscape. The building was never realized. This project was done in relation to the Arranjo Urbanístico para a Av. D. Afonso Henriques, which was an urban renewal program in Porto. In the 1940s, waves of demolition in the old town created a rupture with the remaining buildings, including the Porto Cathedral. Since the 1950s, there have been several studies and proposals to revitalize this part of the city. Siza’s plan was the first to be accepted by the city council in 1968. Please see project series AP178.S1.1968.PR03, also described in this fonds, for further documentation. Siza also proposed a new design in 2001 for the site across the avenue from this one, known as Avenida da Ponte II. This included a museum, library, stores, parking, and houses. This project related to the building Casa Dos 24 Fernando Távora. The scheme was not realized. Documenting this project series are drawings, photographic materials and textual documentation. Among the drawings are plans, profiles, elevations, sections, cadastral maps and working details. Photographic materials document the model, site and residents of the neighborhood. Textual materials include project documentation, as well as correspondence with the city of Porto and suppliers. Note that materials related to the Arranjo Urbanístico para a Av. D. Afonso Henriques (project series AP178.S1.1968.PR03 in this fonds) are also found among these materials.

Description:
File documents the executed project for an office building to house the computer facilities of the British Transport Docks Board (BTDB) at Bulls Bridge and Hayes Road, in Southall, Ealing, England. The building has few doors and no corridors, rooms for computers, data control and preparation, and offices for engineers, programmers, and analysts. The client anticipated a 20% expansion of facilities during the life-cycle of the building and Cedric Price developed designs for "expanding" the building without interrupting computer services which were to run 24 hours a day. Design included interior walls that can be dismounted and reinstalled, a raised flexible floor system, and an exterior cladding system that allowed for an interchange between opaque and transparent panels. Existing conditions material includes an ordinance survey (1963) and floor plans for an unidentified building. Design development and working drawings include site plans, floor plans, sections, elevations, and construction details. The plans show: circulation patterns and relationships between areas; a series of alternate floor plans for computer room expansion; connections between original and expanded services; the computer room and equipment; furniture layout; framing and structure; and plans for acoustic and visual barriers. Also included are axonometric drawings of the phased development/expansion of the structure; design validation charts which measure projected "required" design elements against observation and investigation; environmental control charts exploring alternate proposals for illumination, ventilation, air, temperature, and acoustic control of certain areas, and diagrammatic sections showing environmental controls for air intake, returns and circulation; project requirements charts; project task sequencing diagrams; perspective drawings; elevations and sections for an illuminated sign; and details and wall sections for the exterior cladding. Twenty-nine individual and 60 sets of reprographic copies are stamped "issued contractor". Material for publication includes: details, site plans, floor plans and exterior elevations, b/w post-construction photographs, and a photo collage. Synopsis:
The John Bird fonds documents the professional practice of the Westmount-based architect, and includes drawings and photographs of 24 architectural projects carried out in and around Montréal, Québec between 1954 and 1992. The fonds also contains a number of published articles that document John Bird's professional activities. Key projects that are represented include the Canadian Technical Tape Building, St. Laurent (1955-1963), Saint Gabriel's Church, Montréal (1959-1960), and Saint John Brebeuf Church, Lasalle (1962-1966). The fonds also includes numerous projects for Toronto-Dominion Bank buildings (1959-1992) as well as residential designs completed for the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation (1956-1969).
