Description:
The project series documents Melvin Charney's work for the design competition for the Royal Canadian Air Force Memorial (RCAF) at the National Air Force Museum of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. The project was identified by Charney as the MEMO Series. The competition called for the design of a building of “appropriate character” which would commemorate “the birth and growth of Canadian aviation”. The competition program was very specific, requesting a building on a predefined site, with rooms designed for specific activities. MEMO was formally submitted by Charney and consisted of 91 pages of plans, designs, photographs and instructions on 335-5136 metric graph paper. Instead of constituting a true design for a building, MEMO consists of pages of memorandums intended for the organizers of the competition. The memos describe different ideas of how to conceptualize “the birth and growth of Canadian aviation”, as a critical response to what Charney saw as a “narrowness” in the competition’s vision. Charney referred to the idea of erecting a “singular building in an isolated part of the country” and considering it a memorial as being a “restrictive if not repressive act”. File documents an executed project for a private house in Chondi, Maharashtra, India. Copper House II is the second residence of a couple from Mumbai, who visit the house for a few days each week. It is located in a dense grove of mango trees near a brook that floods each year during the monsoon. To protect the inhabitants from the encroaching landscape, the house is set on an artificial high ground made of dirt dug for a well from the site itself. The open-air courtyard at the centre of the plan is paved in black basalt stones that also allow rainwater to drain below the house. On the ground floor, large horizontal windows are sheathed in slatted ironwood and copper mesh, providing a form of camouflage for the house while still permitting views out from the living spaces. The two boxy spaces upstairs are private: one contains a master bedroom and study, the second a smaller bedroom. The thin copper sheets that cover the upper floor are waterproof and will develop a verdigris over time, further concealing the house within its setting. The project series documents the commission, design, and construction of the Gordillo studio, neighbouring the client’s house (AP164.S1.1993.D2) on Castilla de Ponferrada Street, in Villanueva de la Cañada, Community of Madrid, Spain. The firm identified this project as number 119. “The Gordillo Studio is a prismatic, serrated volume that occupies the plot’s only available strip of land and minimizes its presence through the use of two materials, translucent polycarbonate and xerophilous plantings, which seek the best adaptation to the site, the program and the client. Using this system, a semi-buried interior is constructed in which the light has been modeled as a solid, expansive material, the aim being to satisfy not only the specific demands of the work space but also the creation of an agreeable atmosphere, as austere as it is sensual.” (ARCH270975) Abalos & Herreros worked with Ángel Jaramillo Sanchez, María Auxiliadora Gálvez, Renata Sentkiewicz, Juan Gómez, Fernando Valero and José Torras. In 2002, the project won the COAM 2000 prize. Documenting this project are conceptual, design development and working drawings, photographic and reference materials, correspondence, notes, budgets, reports, studies, forms, project descriptions, invoices, certifications and trade catalogues.

Poli dates this project as 1988, though most of the material is undated (only 2 drawings are dated 1988). However, the project description text includes a bibliography making reference to 1991 publications, though it is possible that this document was created later than the drawings. Project material includes numerous drawings and collages, some which are overlayed with wax, one which features a metal object, and some drawn directly onto topographical maps. Project material also includes a model, a photomontage featuring images of the quarry site and geological strata, and a typed project description. Parts of the text in the project description also appear on some of the drawings. Many of the drawings feature a circular design that is repeated throughout the drawing material in this series. Poli's proposal for the redevelopment seemed to involve the addition of trees to the area and the development of a passageway. One of Poli's drawings makes reference to the earth moon highway featured in an earlier project, Interplanetary Architecture (see AP148.S1.1970.PR02).

Series documents the contribution of architect Carl Krayl to the correspondence circle of Die gläserne Kette, with Krayl writing under the pseudonym Anfang. Born in 1890 in Weinsberg, Germany, Krayl worked on building sites between 1906 to 1909 in preparation for the architectural studies he would undertake from 1910 to 1912 at the Kunstgewerbeschule and the Polytechnikum at Stuttgart. He was employed as a military architect during the First World War and was stationed at Ingolstatd. After the war, Krayl joinded the Arbeitsrat für Kunst lead by Bruno Taut. Between 1919 to 1921 he contributed to "Frühlich", a magazine published by Taut which featured works by some members of Die Gläserne Kette. Krayl joined Bruno Taut in the city architecture department at Magdeburg. From 1923, he worked independently and executed private and public architectural projects. During the Nazi regime he worked as a draftsman for the German State Railway from 1938 to 1946. He died in 1946 in Werder an der Havel, Germany.
