Description:
Series 1, Water Flux and Scrambled Flat, 2002-2010, documents the conception and evolution of a project that was originally a farm building and later became a geology and glaciology museum and research center focused on the Swiss Alps. The project was never realized. R&Sie(n) conceptualized Scrambled Flat as an experimental farm. The project goal was to reconcile European Union’s agricultural regulations, imposing a separation between animal and human living, to the community of Évolène traditional way of living, contiguously with animals, benefiting from the resources they offer. As conceived, Scrambled Flat creates an environment where fluidity between the existence of the animals and the humans is materialized. The size of the form is also adapted from a typical local rural house and exploits the heat of the animals and the insulation of the hay. For this project, R&Sie(n) approached the mayor of the community with the design proposition. The mayor then called for a competition, while also changing the program to an ecology museum and research center illustrating the local effects of global warming and the thawing of the Alps. R&Sie(n) won the competition with Water Flux, a reinterpretation of Scrambled Flat. The project was intended to uncover and exorcise the anxieties of ecological disaster, and the principle of flux related to seasonal change and, more broadly, climate change. The firm designed rooms that reproduce the geological and meteorological environment of the high mountains making it visible and experimental, offering refrigerated spaces for art installations and scientific demonstrations. The concept was also to build with the use of new technologies such as digital modelling, point scanning, and computer numerical control (CNC), combined with ancient local knowledge of knocking on trees to decide which specific pines have the best wood for construction. The building is designed to be constructed with local lamellar wood milled by nearby CNC. The resulting parts would be used for the structure, the insulation, the waterproofing and both the interior and exterior finishes. The design includes a grille wrapping the building, reproducing the profile of traditional houses and enclosure and making it possible to hold the snow inside a typo-morphological imprint. Therefore, the transformable envelope of the building reacts to the rhythm of the seasons. In the winter, the structure would appear like a solid cut-out of ice and snow, with cavities similar to those found in glaciers. In the summer, it would resemble piles of stones used in these areas to make borders. A small pool would collect rainwater and supply it to an interior artificial snowmaking system designed for the gallery. Transformation of the water is an integral part of the design. The records contain images of plans, sections, details for the structure of the façade, renderings, plans of the engineered structure, and photographs documenting the conception of the models with the CNC machinery. The Rhino 3D modelling files are also part of the records along with AutoCAD models and a video documenting the process. The records contain two physical models: a smaller polymer model at 1:20 scale representing the whole structure of the building, and a larger 1:1 latch wood fragment representing detail of the structure in its integrality.

Many of Cedric Price's projects in the series are unexecuted. Significant unrealized projects from the 1960s and 1970s include Fun Palace (1961-1974), Potteries Thinkbelt (1963-1967), Oxford Corner House (1965-1966), and Generator (1976-1980). Significant built projects from the same period include the New Aviary (1960-1966), his first major realized project (with Lord Snowdon and Frank Newby), and Inter-Action Centre (1971-1979). Other realized projects include an office building (BTDB Computer, 1968-1973) and restaurant (Blackpool Project, 1971-1975). Planning projects from the 1960s and 1970s include Potteries Thinkbelt, Detroit Think Grid (1969-1971) and Rice University's design charette, Atom (1967). Project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's landscape project for Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly Building, situated beside Frame Lake, in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Oberlander worked on this project in 1991 with architectural firms Matsuzaki Wright Architects and Pin/Matthews. The team was selected for the project after a design competition. Architects chose to have the new assembly build on the edge of the lake, on the volcanic rock of the Canadian Shield. They used the bog of the site as a transitional space between the building and the city. Oberlander concept design was to integrate the building to the landscape with the least intervention, because of the fagile ecology of the area, and preserve the natural beauty of the landscape. In this idea, the planting for the project only comprises native plants and grasses and very few alteration were made to the existing condition of the site. The project was completed in 1994. The project series contains design development drawings, including planting plans, landscape plans, grading plans, site details, site plans, working drawings, including site plans, planting plans and grading plans, and building drawings used as reference. The project is also documented through textual records, such as correspondence, specifications, concept notes by Oberlander, financial documents, meeting notes, reports, research material and site informations, and also photographs of the construction and the completed work. Located at the corner of Alfred and University Streets, the project consisted of a new 200,000 square foot library for the campus. Influenced by the surrounding gothic collegiate buildings, the library's exteriors focused on vertical, upward movement and had rich textures created by limestone, copper flashing and wood window frames and entrance screens. The library's main entrance at the Union Street and University Street corner was a rotunda that featured a fireplace-lined reading room on the second floor. Other reading rooms and a café lined the building's exterior, while the main library stacks were housed in the core of the building. Wood panelling was disbursed amongst the walls to add warmth to the buildings interior. This project also included plans to expand the library in the following decades. This project received a Governor General's Award in Architecture in 1997. This project is recorded through drawings, photographs, presentation paintings and textual records dating from 1990-1994. The Architectural projects series, 1957-2007, records 82 architectural projects of Aditya Prakash throughout his career as an architect in Chandigarh, India. Most of these projects were completed with his daughter, Chetna Prakash, through his private practice, Arcon Architects, from 1982-2007. These projects include private residences, housing complexes, university campuses, schools, factories, theatres, sport and yoga centres, offices and furniture, among others. The projects include built work, competition entries and proposals, though it is not always clear which projects were realized. While many projects were located in Chandigarh, the series documents projects across northern India, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The projects in this series were identified based on their unique locations and dates. Some projects, located at the same site, consisted of multiple buildings and were designed and/or constructed over long periods of time. The materials for projects like this are described together in one project series, instead of being separated out by building or time period. These projects are recorded largely through original drawings, which include sketches, plans, elevations, sections, perspectives, details, axonometric views and working drawings. However, materials for each project are sparse, often consisting of only 1-10 drawings. Textual records and photographs are also included in the materials for a few projects. The Architectural projects series, 1957-2007, records 82 architectural projects of Aditya Prakash throughout his career as an architect in Chandigarh, India. Most of these projects were completed with his daughter, Chetna Prakash, through his private practice, Arcon Architects, from 1982-2007. These projects include private residences, housing complexes, university campuses, schools, factories, theatres, sport and yoga centres, offices and furniture, among others. The projects include built work, competition entries and proposals, though it is not always clear which projects were realized. While many projects were located in Chandigarh, the series documents projects across northern India, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The projects in this series were identified based on their unique locations and dates. Some projects, located at the same site, consisted of multiple buildings and were designed and/or constructed over long periods of time. The materials for projects like this are described together in one project series, instead of being separated out by building or time period. These projects are recorded largely through original drawings, which include sketches, plans, elevations, sections, perspectives, details, axonometric views and working drawings. However, materials for each project are sparse, often consisting of only 1-10 drawings. Textual records and photographs are also included in the materials for a few projects. The photographs show completed work, while the textual records primarily consist of client correspondence.

This series documents Cedric Price's student work and includes material from his studies at the University of Cambridge School of Architecture (now known as the Department of Architecture), at St. John's College in Cambridge, England, as well as the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, including his thesis project for Oldham Town Centre in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England, United Kingdom. Price's professional memberships and lectures from this time are also documented, as well as RIBA examinations. The series also includes other material produced approximately during Price's student years, including artwork and textual materials. Materials in this series was produced between 1949 and 1960, but predominantly between 1953 and 1957. The series contains design development drawings, reference drawings, other drawings, presentation panels, photographic materials, posters, and textual records for various school projects. Price's time at the University of Cambridge is documented through notes, drawinexerciseses and some projects. Materials from the AA School of Architecture are mostly for projects, including an ice rink, the British Transport Commission offices, exhibition halls and restaurants, a wholesale gown showroom and offices, the Eel and Elephant pub and restaurant, and a design for the Auschwitz Memorial competition, entered jointly with Richard Padovan. Other materials show work-for-hire done by Price, such aillustrations,s; designs for letterheads, advertisements and brochures, and architectural sketches. Material relating to the AA School of Architecture's annual student exhibition in 1956, of which Price was director, are also included.
