Description:
Series documents the contribution of architect Carl Krayl to the correspondence circle of Die gläserne Kette, with Krayl writing under the pseudonym Anfang. Born in 1890 in Weinsberg, Germany, Krayl worked on building sites between 1906 to 1909 in preparation for the architectural studies he would undertake from 1910 to 1912 at the Kunstgewerbeschule and the Polytechnikum at Stuttgart. He was employed as a military architect during the First World War and was stationed at Ingolstatd. After the war, Krayl joinded the Arbeitsrat für Kunst lead by Bruno Taut. Between 1919 to 1921 he contributed to "Frühlich", a magazine published by Taut which featured works by some members of Die Gläserne Kette. Krayl joined Bruno Taut in the city architecture department at Magdeburg. From 1923, he worked independently and executed private and public architectural projects. During the Nazi regime he worked as a draftsman for the German State Railway from 1938 to 1946. He died in 1946 in Werder an der Havel, Germany. The project series documents "Complimenti D'Architettura", an installation for the Biennale di Venezia at the Magazzini del Sale in 1978. The installation consists of a stone wall that showcases the different types of stone used as construction material over time, begining with uncut natural stone and ending with cut polished stone. "It is a symbolic history of architecture [...]: all the intermediate phases, from the collection of scattered pieces of rock, piled up to make a heap, to the hewn and polished stone, its surface as shiny as a mirror." [1] The installation was also presented at the exhibition "La fine del mondo" at the Centro Pecci per l'Arte Contemporanea in Prato, in 2016. The project series contains photographs of the first edition of the installation at the Biennale di Venezia, and installation sketches. It also contains two photographs of the second edition at the Centro Pecci per l'Arte Contemporanea. Richards renovated and drove a Pontiac Firebird, named "Power Plant". The project was the subject of Vikky Alexander's essay "Back to the Future" in the Power Plant Gallery's "The Architecture Series", 1989, pp.25-31. The project was reviewed by Adele Freedman (Globe and Mail, March 5, 1988, p.C12), Christopher Hume (Architect designs gallery on wheels, Toronto Star, Feb. 27, 1988, p. G15), and pictured and discussed in The Canadian Architect, Vol. 33, no. 4, April 1988, p.6. The set pf pieces includes: a) B&W photograph of the Power Plant car in an auto-body workshop, b) The Architecture Series, booklet with Alexander's essay, c)newspaper and magazine clippings/reviews, d)orangesteel brochure rack, that L.W.
