Summary:
What is a city? What determines its specificity? What shapes its quality? The evolution of the contemporary city does not follow a linear movement. It is shaped by transformation processes that are directed toward often distant and conflicting goals. Even though cities are inscribed into global processes and networks, they develop their own specific ways of dealing with these conditions. They tend to produce and reproduce their own specificity, their own patterns and character traits. Using the categories of territory, power, and difference—also lending the book its structure—the texts analyze different case studies of cities and urbanized territories, ranging from the Canary Islands to Hong Kong and Nairobi, unfolding the distinctiveness of their physical and social existences.

Summary:
How does one teach architecture and construction in the first year of study, to students with a range of preexisting experience and potential? As a passionate teacher of architecture for many years, Annette Spiro has pondered this question extensively. Her aim has always been to spark students’ enthusiasm and creativity, while at the same time teaching them to cultivate expertise and attention to detail in their research and design. In six sections, "How to Begin?" spotlights the various aspects and influences that come into play in students’ first year of coursework. Assembling three of Spiro’s lectures, interviews with students, and weekly exercises, this volume also includes a comprehensive glossary delineating key ideas and theses in architecture, as well as a logbook of supplementary events and publications that contribute to shaping the first year of studies in architecture.

The Zurich painter Verena Loewensberg (1912-1986) belongs to the core group of concrete artists in Switzerland, alongside Max Bill, Camille Graeser and Richard Paul Lohse. Next to some lithographs, her woodcuts and linocuts are rated as the most splendid examples of concrete Swiss graphics. At a later stage, she only used the silkscreen technique which had become popular in Europe during the sixties. By using the silkscreen technique to produce graphics, she could best create evenly thick colour surfaces that are both distinct, yet adjoin each other with exact precision. With an essay by Bernadette Walter.

Summary:
"Future Cities Laboratory" reports on the same named research program and its mission to shape sustainable future cities through science, by design, in place. It offers a global perspective on cities from the vantage point of the world's most populous and rapidly urbanizing continent: Asia, which also acts as the base of the laboratory. This volume illustrates the richness and diversity of research at the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL). The book, which is the first in a planned series, describes new processes and types of data that are being used both to understand and improve cities. New approaches pioneered by FCL and its partners offer an important method to bridge the gap between knowledge production and action, with the aim of ensuring the sustainability of future cities. To reach this goal, FCL works closely with stakeholders in government, industry and society. The program has developed many simulation tools to help practitioners visualize the social, environmental or economic consequences of particular planning decisions.
