AP143.S4.D32
Description:
File documents the partially executed project for the Restricted International Competition "South Friedrichstadt as a Place to Live and Work," West Berlin (now Berlin), West Germany (now in Germany). Material in this file was produced between 1980 and 1988. File documents the design for one of four urban blocks in the area of the Kochstrasse and Friedrichstrasse, Berlin. The competition required the preservation of three existing structures and the construction of mixed-used buildings on vacant lots. The architect develops an overall strategy to occupy the urban block by extending the geometry of the three existing buildings onto the site (DR1991:0018:002; DR1991:0018:004-006), on which he overlays what he calls the "Mercator grid", an orthogonal grid oriented according to the compass (DR1991:0018:016). The "el structures" used by Eisenman in House X, House 11a, and the Cannaregio project reappear in plan, and later as forms emerging from the square compartments delimited by the "Mercator grid", this time developed three-dimensionally (House X, 1975-1977, DR1994:0138:001-1546; House 11a, 1978, DR1994:0139:001-303; Cannaregio project, 1978, DR1991:0017:001-094). After finalizing the urban concept, Eisenman concentrates his efforts on the planning of individual buildings, developing the massing of the building facing Kochstrasse in a series of axonometrics (DR1991:0018:088-092), sections (DR1991:0018:088) and facade studies (DR1991:0018:204-210). A series of scrolled drawings study the L-shaped elements and thin slabs with characteristically gridded surfaces found in House X (DR1991:0018:204 and DR1991:0018:209-210). File contains record drawings, conceptual drawings, design development drawings, schematic drawings, competition drawings, presentation drawings, photographic material, and textual records.

Project
House X
AP143.S4.D20
Description:
File documents an unexecuted project for House X, designed for Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Aronoff for a 40-acre site on Lahser Road, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The ground floor consists of a kitchen, dining room, breakfast room, laundry room, two powder rooms and two garages. The second floor consists of a master suite with study, two bedrooms, bathroom, family and living rooms, bar, bathhouse and deck. The third floor consists of a solarium, terrace, bedroom and maid's room with bathroom. A swimming pool, tennis court and gatehouse are situated on the grounds. Thirteen schemes were developed for this project: A, A1, B, C, C1, C2, D, E, E1, E2, F, G, H. Only schemes G and H were developed into detailed floor plans. The drawings have been organized by drawing type, because of the subtle variations which characterize each scheme. Eisenman manipulates the four "els" (fragmentary forms - the three-sided portion of a hollow cube - that he introduced in House X to replace the cube, the preferred generating volume of his first five houses) in over 200 conceptual drawings (DR1994:0138:001-0219). There are numerous design development and complete sets of working drawings (design development drawings: DR1994:0138:239-541; working drawings: DR1994:0138:1182-1457). The project was extensively published, and the file includes a number of drawings and models created for exhibition and publication, including photographs of models (DR1994:0138:1481-1501), pieces of the "axonometric model" constructed after the project had been abandoned (DR1994:0138:1458-1476), and coloured paper cut-outs for collages (cut-outs, DR1994:0138:0929-0933 and DR1994:0138:1477-1480; collage: DR1994:0138:0928). The file also includes drawings and reprographic copies for the following projects: a residence for Mr. and Mrs. Aronoff, designed by Irving E. Palmquist, (DR1994:0138:1512-1521); Bernstein House, Mamaroneck, New York, designed by John Hejduk (DR1994:0138:1524-1531); Maison Domino by Le Corbusier (DR1994:0138:0944-0965); and land subdivision and houses for Arnold Aronoff, designed by Eisenman (DR1994:0138:0434-0441). Material in this file was produced between 1960 and 1977. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, photographic materials, presentation drawings, presentation panels, publication drawings, record drawings, schematic drawings, a study model, textual records, and working drawings.

House 11a
AP143.S4.D23
Description:
File documents an unexecuted project for House 11a, designed for Mr. and Mrs. Kurt Forster, Palo Alto, California, United States. File also includes one drawing for the International Seminary of Design in the Area of Cannaregio-West in Venice, Italy. Material in this file was produced in 1978. File does not contain any conceptual drawings by Eisenman. Freehand diagrams explain the series of "topological" operations at the origin of the design (DR1994:0139:001-008). The original presentation drawings are published in 'Progressive Architecture' (DR1994:0139:283-301). File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, and presentation drawings. - Conceptual drawings include elevations, sections, and axonometrics - mostly black and coloured felt-tip pen on tracing vellum. Design development drawings include plans and axonometrics - some black felt-tip pen and some graphite on yellow tracing paper; and reprographic copies include - one photocopy on wove paper. Presentation drawings include plans, elevations, and axonometrics - mostly pen and black ink on tracing vellum. Copies include a stat of an axonometric of House 11a and a photocopy of part of the Cannaregio site plan.
