This project, 1994-2001, contains material related to the Ost/Kuttner Apartment, a built residential project in New York City. Described by its clients as “Cleopatra’s submarine,” the O/K Apartment converts two adjacent units in a pre-World War II building in New York into a single but divisible space. The Apartment is organized into areas defined less by their programmatic identity—bathroom, bedroom, living room—than by a series of undulating landscapes made up of custom, function-bridging forms, which KOL/MAC developed by digitally compositing cross-sections of everyday domestic objects. To produce the pieces, the architects worked intensively with contractors in a process directly informed by computer-aided fabrication in a variety of fields including ship-building, bobsled design, and stage design. The digital project records are largely in word processing formats, namely Microsoft Word for Mac and ClarisWorks, as well as images in TIF, JPEG, and Mac Pict image formats. There are also a large number of Microstation CAD drawings. There are two major groupings within the digital material: First, there is a body of video and still images. These consist of screen captures of renderings and other digital models. There are also images and HTML for a related website, a photograph viewer showing pictures of a built, physical model of the apartment. Of note, there are two videos which document the early construction of the Apartment, as well as the construction of the shower/bed. The second grouping consists of construction and design documentation. This consists of correspondence, invoices, and other word processing documents which show KOL/MAC’s work with the client, contractor, engineer, and other stakeholders. They also contain a large number of design files and images which document the evolving design of the Apartment. KOL/MAC versioned their working files at certain intervals, and each version represents a snapshot of the working files at a particular time. There is a substantial amount of duplication across these files. There is also a physical component to the records, including three material samples from the apartment, as well as 28 floorplans for the bid set, 6 floorplans, and 2 blueprints. The exhibition was presented at the CCA from 2 March to 29 May 1994. The Greek cross was one of the elements of the grid developed for the 'Museum of Artifical Excavation', and part of the project he submitted for the Internationale Bauausstellung in Berlin (1980-1986). Description:
Series 2, I’ve heard about and Hypnosis chamber, 2004-2006, relates to the conception of the urban structure “I’ve heard about”. The records contain algorithmically-generated images, renderings, pictures of models and exhibitions. There are also photographs of the contour crafting process, 3D models and animated renderings illustrating the construction process of the structure. The project is a conceptual, unbuilt project that is meant to be a habitable organism, an adaptive landscape in a constant state of evolution. By means of transitory scenarios in which the operational mode is entropy and uncertainty, it develops open algorithms based on growth scripts permeable not only to human expressions, but also to the most discrete data such as the chemical emissions (for example due to stress or anxiety) of those who inhabit it. The chemical information is harvested through nanoreceptors feeding the VIAB machine with information. This biostructure becomes the visible part of human contingencies and their negotiation in real time. The structure is conceptualized to be in constant construction through the VIAB machine which is also a constituent of the structure itself. It secretes fiber cement, shaping the landscape where it is located and through which it moves. It generates the reticular structure using a process modelled on contour crafting. The VIAB machine was developed with Robotics Research Lab of the University of Southern California and takes its name from the terms viability and variability. R&Sie(n) considers that due to its mode of emergence “I’ve heard about” fabrication is not subjugated to any political power. Hypnosis chamber is a component of “I’ve heard about”. It consists of an indoor chamber, which was realized as a full-scale sample constructed through automated machinery. The chamber is situated as a part of the whole urban structure presented by “I’ve heard about,” and its goal is to immerse the audience into the project, into a fictional environment only reachable by hypnosis. In this context, hypnosis is a way to help citizens escape from their social condition and experience the new condition of citizenship imagined in “I’ve heard about”, where democracy is re-evaluated as a process of self-determination. Both parts of the projects were shown in contemporary art museums. First at Musée d’art de la ville de Paris in Paris (2005), the Hypnotic chamber is permanently on view at Towada Art Center in Towanda, Japan. AP193.S4 contains a video orienting the project into François Roche theoretical stance, research as speculation, that can be summarize as the use of technological tools to take a critical and political position through esthetic in order to open new lines of thoughts. Album showing exterior and interior views of the "Château de Madrid" in Bois de Boulogne (boulevard Richard Wallace, Neuilly-sur-Seine), France. This Château was built in 1912 (a drawing of the building in the album bears the date 1910) in the Renaissance style where used to stand the "Château de Boulogne", afterwards named the "Château de Madrid", built by François 1er between 1528 and 1568. The name evokes the short captivity of the King in Spain. The castle was sold in 1792 and demantled to recuperate the materials. The building showed in the album is also named "Château de Madrid" as seen on a post-sign in one of the photographs. This building is also visible on some old postcards (cf. documentation). Also visible on another post-sign, is the street name 'Avenue Richard Wallace'. Corbel writes (p. 57), that in 1851, the 'Madrid Restaurant' was located at the end of Saint-James, in a secluded area of the Bois de Boulogne. On page 58, he states that in 1870, the restaurant became one of the general quarters for the defense of Paris and that in 1912, it was reconstructed, probably referring to the same building. Also, in 1922, a special dinner was given in honour of the emperor Khaï-Dinh. Further research may provide more information on this specific building which seems to have since disappeared. Other views in this album, show the Café Meyer, the Café Restaurant Cardinal in Paris (one of the oldest of Paris) and other views of buildings and interiors of Paris.

Description:
Series 1, Erasmus Bridge, Rotterdam, Netherlands, 1990-1996, documents the design, conception and construction of a third bridge for Rotterdam over the Nieuwe Maas River. The bridge connects the Kop van Zuid neighborhood, located on the south side of the river, to Willemsplein, located on the north side. The bridge is considered as a landmark in Rotterdam’s landscape. The Erasmus Bridge was a formative project in the thinking of UNStudio. It was originally supposed to be designed by architect Maarten Struijs who was the city of Rotterdam principal architect and who is responsible for the concept of the neighboring Willem Bridge. Ben van Berkel came later into the project and was hired as a designing consultant along with architect Wim Quist. Ben van Berkel proposed design was selected allowing him and his firm, which was called Van Berkel & Bos Architectuurbureau at that time, to supervise the conception and construction of the project, from the original concept to piers design to the selection of every item of bridge furniture such as traffic lights, bridge camera and handrails. The bridge was designed to fit the distinct character and industrial past of Rotterdam. The construction of this landmark was one component of a larger redevelopment project, coinciding with other major developments in the city of Rotterdam. The goal was to develop a dense urban intervention on the southern shore of the Nieuwe Maas, in the Kop van Zuid neighborhood. This explains the implication of UNStudio in the planning of urban configuration of the neighborhoods on both sides of the river and their work for Spido, a ferry company operating on the Nieuwe Maas, work spaces and parking garage. This commercial building was designed by the firm and also hosts The Grand Café and Jazz Café. This commercial building is integrated to one of the bridge pillar on the north shore of the river. For the design the firm used AutoCAD to work along with engineers and to conceptualize 3D models. They also used the software to evaluate the circulation flow of drivers, pedestrians and streetcars, measuring its impact on the structure and the urban configuration of the neighborhoods on both sides of the river. The records contain sketches for bridge and pier design, plans and sections for pier, Spido and bridge, architectural and construction details created by engineering companies for every component of the bridge, from drawbridge, to cable car system, to bridge furnitures such as traffic light, handrails and cameras and photographs documenting the research for precedent and the original configuration of the neighborhoods on both sides of the river. The record contains AutoCAD plans, details and sections for both the bridge and Spido parking garage. The records also contain one physical model: a small scale plastic, glass and metal model of the bridge.

File documents Generator, an unexecuted project for the Gilman Paper Company, at the White Oak Plantation, in Yulee, Florida. After an initial investigation Cedric Price proposed a complex that could accommodate company activities, cultural events, and artist residencies and would provide "a menu of items for individual and group demands of space, control, containment and delight. A place to work, create, think, and stare." ('Architectural Review', Jan. 1980, 16). The design called for timber-framed structures with variable infill panels and cladding, along with screens, to be placed on a grid of concrete pads by cranes with the help of computers in response to users' needs. Conceptual, schematic and design development drawings show grid placement, site layout, landscaping, designs for cubes and components, proposed activities, axonometric views, and design notes with sketches. Development sketches, site plans, and charts include site analysis examining future growth, activity charts, shadow study plans, and axonometric details. Drawings of the structures include: plans, elevations, details, and perspective views for cubes, screens, and cladding; shadow studies for cube variations; and axonometric views of cube arrangements. Other drawings include: site plans and sections; landscaping and parking layouts; plans for circulation patterns; drawings for boardwalks; and electrical and drainage plans. Charts study design validity, activities, networks, project feasibility, component life-cycle, and cube and component placement/construction sequencing. Computer generated printouts by John Frazer, et al show perspective views of cubes from various viewpoints. Two sets of annotated reprographic copies show details for a typical cube and the foundation. Presentation and publication materials include: photographs and reprographic copies of design models; coloured reprographic copies of computer parts and facilities; a coloured air-brushed rendering of cubes and screens by "Jeremie '77"; two perspective renderings; and reprographic copies made from published material.
