The Ulrich Königs Chemnitz Stadium project records, 1995-1996, document the competition entry and design for an innovative stadium in Chemnitz, Germany. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts. He started writing seriously in 1846 and spent the years 1853 to 1857 in England as the American Consul in Liverpool. The collection of essays that constitute 'Our Old Home' comes from the journals he kept during his stay in England. After spending two years in Italy he returned to the United States and completed his final novel, 'The Marble Faun' and 'Our Old Home'. File documents an executed project for House VI, a weekend/vacation house designed for Richard and Suzanne Frank for a six-acre lot at Great Hollow Road, Cornwall, Connecticut. The file also includes material for renovations to House VI undertaken in 1983, 1986, and 1989-1990. Material in this file was produced between 1971 and 1989. The 1,500 square foot plan of House VI comprises a kitchen, dining room, living room and study on the ground floor, and a bedroom and bathroom on the second floor. The most notable formal and compositional ambiguities of House VI are the two staircases, one green, and the other red and positioned on the ceiling. Documents include drawings by Eisenman concerning the geometric operations at the origin of House VI (DR1994:0134:055-067), conceptual drawings (DR1994:0134:001-068; DR1994:0134:086-130; DR1994:0134:131-160), numerous colour studies of the elevations (DR1994:0134:262-343), a presentation panel (DR1994:0134:521) notes (DR1994:0134:779-782), and a first set of working drawings and "check set," completed on 30 Aug. 1973, (DR1994:0134:667-689). Documents also include drawings for major revisions which occurred from 3 October 1973 through August 1974, photocopies of photographs of the house under construction (DR1994:0134:783-805), and a copy of the site survey (DR1994:0134:806). Planned and executed renovations to House VI began in 1983. Documents relating to unexecuted renovations and additions of 1983 includes drawings (DR1994:0134:604-615), a "bid set" and annotated copies (DR1994:0134:552 and DR1994:0134:554-570; copies: DR1994:0134:646-655), and a photocopy of the site plan indicating Eisenman's initial ideas (DR1994:0134:224). Documents relating to unexecuted renovations and additions of 1986 includes seven drawings (DR1994:0134:553 and DR1994:0134:628-633). House VI was extensively rebuilt between 1988 and 1990. The renovations included the replacement of the exterior plywood walls, the insertion of steel reinforcement, a new roof with skylights, the replacement of the original stucco by a coat of Finestone, the repainting of the interior, and the addition of a plexiglas barrier to the staircase. Documents relating to the renovations of 1988-90 include original and photocopied detail drawings, an interior paint schedule by Eisenman's office, correspondence, original and photocopied technical literature, an incomplete copy of the specifications, and a copy of the original survey map (identical to DR1994:0134:806). There are also numerous photographs of the building before, during and after renovation, one photograph of presentation axonometrics for House VI, and one photograph of Eisenman's office. Documents relating to a publication on House VI include: notes (DR1994:0134:807-853), the book mock-up (DR1994:0134:854-855), and fragments of the original coloured transformation diagrams (DR1994:0134:530-531). File contains conceptual drawings, including plans, axonometrics, and sections - many black felt-tip pen and/or coloured felt-tip pen on tracing paper; and reprographic copies - mostly photocopies on wove paper. Description:
This project series documents renovations to the Stratford Festival Theatre in Stratford, Ontario from 1994-1997. The office identified the project number as 9428. This project consisted of the major reimagining and renewal of the famous tent-shaped theatre, which had not previously been updated in the 40 years since its original construction. Conceived with Thomas Payne as the partner-in-charge, the project reconceptualised the existing front-of-house spaces, the performance auditorium and the formal arrival space. The auditorium, which contained a Greek-style thrust stage inspired by Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, saw an increase in comfort by eliminating some seats to make the remaining more spacious. With this, site lines to the stage and the theatre acoustics were also improved. A large expansion of the theatre's lobby, box office, festival shops and member spaces accommodated the theatre's growing number of patrons. On the outside, a large curved entrance drive was added with extensive landscaping and gardens to add to the grandeur of the formal arrival area. A marquee space was also added to the building, which housed a year-round terrace. Thomas Payne created this project's original master plan under a different project number in 1988, but it should be noted that some materials in both projects are overlapping (see project series AP056.S1.1988.PR03 in this fonds). The project is recorded through drawings, presentation paintings and some textual materials dating from 1988-1996. The drawings are mostly originals and include sketches, presentation drawings, drawings for the model, plans, elevations, sections, perspectives, details and drawings of new furnishings. The textual records, which describe the project's design concept, are part of a presentation book.

The series documents the design of Beaver Lake Pavilion, built for the City of Montréal between 1955 and 1959 as part of the redevelopment of Mount Royal Park. Sise worked with architect Guy Desbarats (1925-2003) on the project. This project series documents the design and construction of the Eaton’s store building at Dundas Square in Toronto from 1973-1977. The office identified the project number as 7303. This project, commissioned by The T. Eaton Co. Limited, consisted of a one million square foot department store with thirteen floors, ten above ground and three below. The building boasted nine floor of retail space, seamlessly connected through elevators and escalators. The remaining floors hosted office and storage spaces. Located at the corner of Yonge and Dundas streets, the Eaton’s store was connected to the Eaton Centre mall to its south. The mall, designed and built simultaneously with the Eaton’s store, was designed by the architecture firm Craig Zeidler Strong. For the Eaton’s store project, Parkin Architects Planners created a joint venture with architect C. Blakeway Millar, referred to as Parkin Millar in the documentation. Parkin Millar was the associate architects on this project, with the Eaton’s company architect, E.L. Hankinson, working as the primary architect. Each of the firms mentioned worked closely together to develop a cohesive design for the Eaton’s store and Eaton’s Centre mall, which is evident in the materials. The project is recorded through drawings, textual records, a book and presentation boards dating from 1973-1977. There are a large number of original drawings and sketches for the project. Most of the reprographic copies are arranged within the textual materials. There are presentation boards of the Vancouver Eaton's store in this project series that were likely used as reference by the architects. The textual records consist of correspondence, meeting minutes, site reports, change orders, consultancy records, inter-office letters, and specifications. Also in this project series is a special edition of the Eaton News, a monograph with in depth descriptions of the project.
