Résumé:
From 1970 until 1987, Gilles Deleuze held a weekly seminar at the Experimental University of Vincennes and, starting in 1980, at Saint-Denis. In the spring of 1981, he began a series of eight seminars on painting and its intersections with philosophy. The recorded sessions, newly transcribed and translated into English, are now available in their entirety for the first time. Extensively annotated by philosopher David Lapoujade, On Painting illuminates Deleuze’s thinking on artistic creation, significantly extending the lines of thought in his book Francis Bacon. Through paintings and writing by Rembrandt, Delacroix, Turner, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Klee, Pollock, and Bacon, Deleuze explores the creative process, from chaos to the pictorial fact. The introduction and use of color feature prominently as Deleuze elaborates on artistic and philosophical concepts such as the diagram, modulation, code, and the digital and the analogical. Through this scrutiny, he raises a series of profound and stimulating questions for his students: How does a painter ward off grayness and attain color? What is a line without contour? Why paint at all?

Résumé:
The concept "Typophoto", the synthesis of photography and typography, was coined by renowned Bauhaus artist and theorist László Moholy-Nagy and played a foundational role in the modernist graphic design movement known as the New Typography. Jessica D. Brier examines how Typophoto was embraced by early graphic designers—a group who ultimately reinvented photography as a tool of modern consumerism. "Typophoto" embodied designers’ belief in photography as an efficient form of visual communication, merging the material and the visual by abstracting both typographic and photographic form and transmuting photography into graphic material through the halftone process.

Résumé:
In 2020, the prominent Danish feminist Emma Holten read an article stating that women were a net ‘ deficit’ to society. Women took more than they gave, ‘ draining’ the public purse by giving birth and taking parental leave. They contributed less than their fair share in taxes, because they often worked part-time to look after other people at home, or held low-paid jobs in the public sector. Denmark would be richer if women’ s lives looked more like men’ s, the economic experts concluded. A similar story is told around the globe. How did we get here? In "Deficit", Emma Holten traces how economic thinkers – from the Enlightenment onwards – created a value framework that overlooked and neglected ‘ women’ s work’ and acts of care. She reveals how the economic models that drive political decisions today are just as flawed, giving us unparalleled monetary wealth, but causing deep social harms that are hurting us all.

Résumé:
Christoph Hesse Architects is based in Berlin and Korbach, a small town in the northwestern part of the German federal state of Hesse. This rural area in the green heart of Germany is the location of most of the projects the firm has realized since its establishment in 2010, though occasionally, they do plant their rural concepts into an urban context. Christoph Hesse Architects and their friends see their designs as open places of culture. On the one hand, they are catalysts for change in thought, intended to change people’s perspectives and stimulate self-efficacy in society. On the other hand, they are actual interventions in globally prevailing structures that can be disrupted and changed locally. Thus, the firm distinguishes between projects acting as perspective changes and as system changers.

Résumé:
"The New Design Museum" brings together theories and voices from leading international institutions and independent initiatives addressing the transformed––and continually transforming––nature of design in the twenty-first century and its planetary scope in both practical and discursive dimensions. By mapping a new landscape of institutional practices across different geographical locations, it reveals how spaces of culture dedicated to design need transformation—of their missions, programs, and outreach platforms—to respond to an ever-expanding outlook on design as a field that is moving beyond its traditional presentation as an object-based practice. This book ultimately examines the critical role of cultural institutions as engines for knowledge production, where a democratic politics of mutual care and shared purpose can be explored and exercised.

Résumé:
"Dirty Old River" brings together twelve essays penned by Tom Emerson over the past two decades. Written on very different occasions as contributions to books or articles in magazines, they explore a wide range of topics through the lens of architecture. The book’s title is borrowed from the British rock band The Kinks’ cult song “Waterloo Sunset” to symbolize a journey through the interweaving of culture, imagination, and the built environment. Naturally, Emerson writes about architecture: how it is designed, drawn, and built. Yet he also turns his attention to other, wider fields, from the transformation of materials to the nuances of human creativity, the explosive early works of his celebrated fellow architect Frank O. Gehry, and the intimate craftsmanship behind the literary spaces of French writer Georges Perec.
