Résumé:
This edition features Japanese architect Go Hasegawa, introducing nineteen works, from his first project, House in a Forest (2006), to his most recent completed works, Yoshino Cedar House and Chapel in Guastalla. Our perception of spatial dimensions, gravity, and time has been key to Hasegawa’s approach since the outset of his career, and he challenges preconceived notions involving these concepts. Through the thoughtful presentation of detailed section drawings and new photographs, the issue reveals the structural diversity and relative spatial weight of his architecture. With an essay by Hasegawa entitled “Amplitude in the Experience of Space”.

Résumé:
Hermann Czech gained recognition in Europe in the 1970s with projects based on a strategy of continuation and convention instead of contrast. His work includes homes, hotels, schools, and urban planning, as well as small-scale interventions and exhibition design. In rejecting facile connections between theory and practice, he developed a multidimensional, critical and early postmodern position amid a climate of reformation and avant-gardism. Guest-edited by Christian Kühn of Technische Universität Wien, this issue explores the many facets of Czech’s architectural thought and practice through works ranging from furniture design to urban-scale infrastructure.

Résumé:
As his firm’s most culturally significant buildings have been recently nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status, A+U features the humane, modern architecture of Alvar Aalto. The Finnish architect’s canon would join that of France’s Le Corbusier and the American Frank Lloyd Wright. His distinctive use of spatial vibrancy, the interaction between his works and the surrounding landscape, and the balance between materials and details — as the issue title suggests — are presented in photographs and narrative descriptions of 12 villas. This compilation is by Finnish architect and art historian Sirkkaliisa Jetsonen and architectural photographer Jari Jetsonen.

Résumé:
This publication provides a comprehensive review of Mecanoo works over three decades, divided into two distinct sections. The first is a foundation of projects in their native Netherlands, tracing their Dutch roots back to early housing projects that reveal a strong social agenda, as 'they forge a trail through people, place, and purpose to that poetry' through their designs, described in an essay by founding partner Francine Houben. The second section features works that define their influence outside of the Netherlands. In this first monograph devoted to Mecanoo, a+u reveals modern libraries, theaters, and campuses that can be found all over the world.
