Résumé:
This instalment examines the past decade of architectural discourse in the Netherlands. Following the global financial crisis in 2008, the construction industry faced a slowdown; what was then considered “typically” Dutch has since faded, replaced with a new, more modest attitude in the Dutch architecture scene. Across three themes, guest editor Kirsten Hannema introduces nineteen projects that are perceived as combining broader social issues, and which in turn have taken on a new form of cultural momentum, despite going relatively unnoticed in comparison with the “SuperDutch” generation. With work by NL Architects, Superuse Studios, Mecanoo, more.

Résumé:
The first monographic issue dedicated to Toshiko Mori, a Japanese architect based in New York. Since founding her practice in 1981, Mori has become recognised for her unique design approach, keen eye for detail, and works that reflect a sensitive integration of design, materials, and technology with the site. For Mori, teaching goes in parallel with practice, and her essay in this issue illustrates several initiatives she introduced as a faculty member over the years. Featuring eighteen works built since 2000, including the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Peter Freeman Gallery, 277 Mott Street, and the Watson Institute at Brown University, as well as nine private residences.

Résumé:
The May 2016 issue of a+u is a special issue dedicated to recent works by BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group. The team is engaged with projects both large and small in locations all over the world. The issue reflects that diversity, with the first half devoted to the large, urban-scale works for which the practice is best known, and the second half devoted to smaller works, including residences and a pavilion. Including those nearing completion, 20 of the 22 projects introduced here are currently underway. Over the next few years, we will see many more of their works finished.
