Résumé:
Receive a free copy of the third issue of AMag PT, a new series exclusively dedicated to Portuguese architecture, together with the purchase of AMag 32. Issue 32 features eighteen works by three French studios located in three cities – two collectives and one singular office – which have both essentially and formally different approaches, intervention contexts, and languages. Atelier Ordinaire develops its small-scale projects using vernacular knowledge and mainly natural, local materials. Atelier EGR focuses on large-scale projects that often entail social impact and collective use. Paris-based architect Jean-Christophe Quinton primarily seeks opportunities to make a qualitative contribution through his work. Depending on the context, scale, and function, this can shift between an individual or a collective point of view. Issue 03 PT features João Mendes Ribeiro, an architecture practice based in Coimbra (PT).

Based in Luanda, Angola, the office of COSTALOPES is headed by Alexandre and António Falcão Costa Lopes. One of the most distinguished offices in Angolan architecture today, its portfolio includes numerous projects reflecting both the architects’ heritage and the strong Portuguese and Brazilian influence that marks the region. This monographic issue details works of all scales and materials, from an urban waterfront revitalisation to city centre high-rises, each realised in the dense and sprawling capital. The architects’ belief in open projects, anchored in local cultures and rooted in collective life and public space, leads to a globally connected, critical practice.

The new generation of Mexican architecture is represented by Taller Héctor Barroso and Estudio Macías Peredo, two offices whose work emerges in harmony with the surrounding site, generating spaces with an emotional content that evoke memory and highlight the habitable quality of their architecture. Projects by the former, established by Barroso in Mexico City in 2011, often take advantage of the natural resources of each place, including local materials and construction methods. Estudio Macías Peredo was launched in 2012 in Guadalajara, with a special focus on the local context. This developing interest has become the central theme of their approach.

Résumé:
This instalment focuses on three Austrian practices which together symbolise an architecture that, at its essence, remains mindful to the surrounding context. Featuring works on different scales offering solutions to various functions and programmes, the projects represent a common ability to bring together local materials, traditional practices, and contemporary forms. Most examples are of smaller dimensions, with many being individual residences, and a number have been produced on tight budgets and with restrictive sites or regulations. Through careful materialisation and expression, each of these offices aptly demonstrates the strengths of Austrian architecture today.
