Editor Ana Leal uses the word “serendipity” to refer to their respective bodies of work, describing how “the reinterpretation of the site, to acknowledge the culture and tradition of the place through local materials and techniques, is a clear example of an answer to contemporary needs… dictated by an extraordinary sensitivity.” Along with the highlighted projects it includes a conversation with Jonathan Sergison, Stephen Bates, and Tony Fretton. Featured are Woolf’s Lion Rooms, Lost Villa, and Brick Leaf House, as well as various urban and suburban housing projects by Sergison Bates

Résumé:
This instalment focuses on three Austrian practices which together symbolise an architecture that, at its essence, remains mindful to the surrounding context. Featuring works on different scales offering solutions to various functions and programmes, the projects represent a common ability to bring together local materials, traditional practices, and contemporary forms. Most examples are of smaller dimensions, with many being individual residences, and a number have been produced on tight budgets and with restrictive sites or regulations. Through careful materialisation and expression, each of these offices aptly demonstrates the strengths of Austrian architecture today.

Résumé:
Based in Valencia, Fran Silvestre Arquitectos reflects an architecture of rigour based on the systematic use of sharp geometric forms and the language of whiteness. The way the houses relate to the surrounding landscapes, the fluid organisation of their interiors, and how large glazed surfaces open to the outside might recall the California modernism that emerged in the 1950s. Yet they address a whole range of other concerns, from climatic transformations to the experimentations made possible through the use of new technologies. This volume features fourteen realised works along with newly planned projects, such as a landmark wind tower situated in Valencia’s port.

Résumé:
Established in Toulouse in 2013, Bureau Architectures Sans Titre (BAST) operates through research-led work with an “anonymous approach”. Despite this deliberate lack of attribution, every BAST project has a distinct character. The GENS group, founded in 2009 and currently with offices in Nancy and Paris, defines itself as seeking to exploit what it calls the “economy of the project”. These two offices represent the new generation, and their production reflects how collective work is valued. Through a selection built works, the magazine explores an architecture less marked by the use of any formal language, but rather the methodological approach to solving each project.
