Résumé:
The second monograph that AV devotes to BIG is a snapshot of the busy moment that the studio is currently living. Their mediatic buildings have managed to combine the freedom of formal and ludic gestures that empathize with all kinds of clients and audiences, with a rigorous analysis of economic and environmental conditions. Opening with a conversation with Luis Fernández-Galiano, in which the Danish architect goes over his career, the monograph presents 35 works and designs drawn up since 2013, including the Maritime Museum of Denmark in Helsingør, the VIA 57 West residential building in New York, the LEGO House in Billund, the Amager waste treatment plant and skiing slope in Copenhagen, the 2 World Trade Center in New York, and the experimental project to build cities on Mars.

Austrian architects Baumschlager Eberle are the focus of this instalment. The practice, founded in 1985 by Carlo Baumschlager and Dietmar Eberle, has evolved into a global firm comprising eleven offices in countries throughout Europe and Asia. Today it is run by Eberle together with several partners. Academic research and practical experience come together in the architecture of Baumschlager Eberle, which primarily concerns itself with the relationship between density and the atmosphere of cities, as well as the possibility of designing zero-energy buildings. The issue includes a theoretical essay by Eberle, along with extensive profiles of sixteen projects completed since 2000.

The year that saw the Pritzker go to the Catalan studio RCR Arquitectes, and the establishment of the Norman Foster Foundation in Madrid, also witnessed important inaugurations like that of the Botín Centre in Santander – the first building by Renzo Piano in Spain –, the Congress Center in Palma by Francisco Mangado, or the new stadium of Atlético de Madrid in the old ‘Peineta’, by Cruz & Ortiz.

Résumé:
LAN (Local Architecture Network), based in Paris, was founded in 2002 by Benoît Jallon (Grenoble, 1972) and Umberto Napolitano (Naples, 1975). Encompassing social and urban issues as well as debates on form and environmental and economic factors, LAN’s work seeks going beyond the vital cycle of users through the studied indetermination of the structures in their buildings, which are in this way able to adapt to possible changes of function throughout the years, and to the abstraction of their compositive language. This line of research can be found in the twenty projects included in this issue, almost all of them built in France, and a good part of them in Paris and its environs.

After coinciding at the office of James Stirling in London, Sheila O’Donnell (1953) and John Tuomey (1954) set up their own studio in 1988 in Dublin, where they started working on projects to renew the city’s urban center and from where they now design large cultural buildings in London or Budapest. Their work has expanded in scale and scope, furthering their commitment with material quality and formal coherence, and has been distinguished with the prestigious RIBA Gold Medal in 2015.
