Food and drink – ranging from vital intake of nourishment to opulent society dinners. Just as broad is the range of places to eat and drink presented in Issue 2012/3 – from simple snack bar to exclusive Parisian restaurant. Concept Gastronomy is packed with bars, cafés and restaurants with very individual characters and special features. The new canteen of the Spiegel publishing house in Hamburg with its amazing multi-facetted luminous ceiling is one example, while the wooden interior cladding in a sushi bar in Sydney designed for pleasant acoustics is another. Overall architectural and kitchen technology planning of gastronomic facilities is considered in an extensive article in the Typology section. Floor area requirements, spatial planning principles and process lines are explained by means of exemplary floor plans, providing concrete planning aids.

Résumé:
The idea of "Total Architecture", as described by Ove Arup in his vision of design, continues to serve as the maxim for the globally operating engineering firm ARUP and its Building Engineering Department. Drawing on selected projects from recent years, this second volume in the new DETAIL engineering series shows how future-oriented and sustainable civil engineering can be combined with this ideal of a holistic design process – always with the aim of achieving perfect unity of strength and elegance in every structure. The focus is placed on the different processes that have accompanied the presented construction projects. Connections are shown between the individual buildings whose synergies are pursued in an exemplary fashion. The remarkable building projects reveal what continues to drive and inspire the engineers at ARUP to this day: a passion for pioneering work.

Résumé:
"Housing should be seen as a process, and not as a product." The book deals with the issue of sustainability in a planning context but also analyses a building's usage and ageing over its 'life cycle'. A system of criteria specially developed in an accompanying research project can be used to compare and evaluate buildings, and as a tool for optimising the sustainability of buildings in development during the planning process. By contrast, most existing sustainability systems are conceived not as design and planning tools, but as instruments for evaluating finished buildings and completed planning. 15 practical examples explain the ways in which these criteria and other aspects of sustainable building can be implemented in sophisticated architecture and how these can then be experienced.

Résumé:
As innovation and new developments in technology now follow each other faster and faster, making yesterday's architectural fantasies today's construction realities, there's already a movement to return to the essential things in life: be it a quest for sustainability, which implies basic principles such as incorporating a region's typologies and materials, or for reasons of expense, which often prompt a search for efficient designs or manufacturing technology, or even aesthetic requirements that allow people to step out of our increasingly noisy and heterogeneous environment. However, achieving simplicity in design belies the enormous amount of effort required to plan and realise these types of architectural designs. That’s why the publication Building Simply Two – just as volume one – aims to look behind the facade. Well-known authors who are experts in their fields investigate the particular solutions used in a construction project in terms of design and construction, including material selection, cost efficiency and sustainability.
