David Chipperfield was awarded the Netherlands’ Sikkens Prize “for his approach towards the urban context, his talent in re-using existing buildings and monuments, and his subtle and subdued use of colour”. Chipperfield was somewhat surprised, because he considered his use of colour and material to be a logical consequence of his views on architecture, not an exceptional achievement. Yet, he interpreted the recognition as encouragement to reflect on the role of colour. Chipperfield’s architecture contributes to uniqueness and creates meaningful environments. It is open to change and reinterpretation, because the process of designing, experiencing, and learning never ceases.

Published for David Chipperfield's 2018 exhibition at the Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza, this book documents a selection of 15 current and recent projects by the practice, shown at varying stages in their development in order to convey the range of activities that takes place in an architecture studio today. "It represents our attempt to show how we work, how we develop ideas, how we work in parallel in different projects, cultures, and with different resources, priorities and collaborators, balancing local and global perspectives," says Chipperfield of the exhibition concept informing this volume. This monograph is devoted to the winning project by b720 architects and David Chipperfield Architects, describing all details from the design process to the construction phase. The most significant proposition breaks up the massive program requirements (241.519,92 m2) into a series of separate but inter-related buildings on a public plaza, engendering a spatial composition that attempts to break the rigid and monolithic image of justice. This proposal also attempts to provide an equilibrium in the relationships between the different working areas, public areas and landscape. The book is organized in four different sections.
