Résumé:
At the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris, the newly erected Eiffel Tower became one of the first icons of illuminated architecture, a nocturnal "lighthouse." It was not until decades later, in the 1920s, when a building’s evening façade became a central issue for residential and commercial architects, who began to look for avant-garde and aesthetically striking ways to light up their ever-taller works in all the major cities of the world. Both European and American architects wanted to distance their buildings from the garish electric signage that had come to dominate the street-level cityscape, so they worked with more delicately colored floodlights. Contemporary architects use many of the same techniques today, aided by technological advances that allow them to be implemented in particularly dramatic ways. "Luminous Buildings: Architecture of the NIght" opens a dialogue on the often overlooked but exciting connections between architecture, technology and light, offering points of reference in historical buildings and utopias, more recent designs, paintings and photographs of nighttime facades, and scholarly texts.

Between the years 1950 and 1972, when Paris was in the twilight of its classical period, pilot and photographer Roger Henrard preserved the city he knew and loved from the seat of a single-engine American army surplus Piper Cub. Henrard used a high-speed plate camera to systematically document the city from its outskirts to its centre. His photographs show not only Paris's stations, museums, department stores, and housing projects but also its urban fabric and interconnections - the tightly knit medieval districts as well as the rectilinear geometry of the Haussmanian boulevards. "Above Paris" is Henrard's study of the urban landscape of Paris and its best-known monuments. Images, grouped by themes such as the course of the Seine, the main roads, the stations, and the neighborhoods of Paris give a clear overview of the city's layout. Maps at the beginning of each chapter orient the reader.

The Lost Vanguard documents the work of modernist architects in the Soviet Union during the years following the 1917 revolution and civil war. In little more than a decade, some of the most radical buildings of the twentieth century were completed by a small group of architects who developed a new architectural language in support of new social goals of communal life. Rarely published and virtually inaccessible until the collapse of the Soviet regime, these important buildings have remained unknown and unappreciated. Richard Pare's photographs reveal the powerful forms of these structures, some still in use but many now abandoned and decayed. Massive industrial complexes like the Dnieper River Dam and MoGES, which supplies electricity to the city of Moscow; vast communal houses for workers, including Ginzburg's Narkomfin; commercial buildings and government offices; and smaller clubs and theaters were all built in this brief period. In an incisive essay, architectural historian Jean-Louis Cohen surveys the history of the period, providing a context for the emergence of this startling new architecture in parallel to contemporary experiments in Europe.

Résumé:
Between 1917 and 1945, a tide of hyperindustrialization washed over the United States and the Soviet Union. While the two countries remained ideologically opposed, the factories that amassed in Stalingrad, Moscow, Detroit, Buffalo, and Cleveland were strikingly similar, as were the new forms of modern work and urban and infrastructural development that supported this industrialization. Drawing on previously unknown archival materials and photographs, the essays in ''Detroit-Moscow-Detroit'' document a stunning two-way transfer of technical knowledge between the United States and the USSR that greatly influenced the built environment in both countries, upgrading each to major industrial power by the start of the Second World War. The innovative research presented here explores spatial development, manufacturing, mass production, and organizational planning across geopolitical lines to demonstrate that capitalist and communist built environments in the twentieth century were not diametrically opposed and were, on certain sites, coproduced in a period of intense technical exchange between the two world wars. A fresh account of the effects of industrialization and globalization on US and Soviet cultures, architecture, and urban history, ''Detroit-Moscow-Detroit'' will find wide readership among architects, urban designers, and scholars of architectural, urban, and twentieth-century history.

Résumé:
One of the most acclaimed architects working in Brazil since the mid-twentieth century, Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928–2021) began building in the 1950s, championing an approach often associated with "Brutalism" but expanding well beyond it. This retrospective catalogue is the first major publication on Mendes da Rocha since the establishment of his archive at the Casa da Arquitectura in 2021. A team of international scholars provides a comprehensive view of the architect’s trajectory and the collective dimension of his work, along with thematic essays. Mendes da Rocha’s identity as a South American architect interested in the geographic relation between nature and culture is underlined. The book’s contributors explore his concern with the social and anthropogenic impact of the continent’s development, as well as its colonial past and postcolonial future.
