La plupart d'entre nous a, à un moment de son existence, ressenti le besoin de se défaire du superflu et de repartir à zéro. Pourtant, même s'ils convoitent ou collectent des biens matériels, les hommes sont souvent tentés par l'idée de voyager léger. Les grands créateurs d'œuvres, qu'elles soient artistiques, architecturales ou musicales, ont compris le principe de la présence de l'absence : en le réduisant à l'essentiel, l'objet créé gagne en clarté, en qualité et en force. Cette pensée se retrouve à travers divers pays et cultures.
