Résumé:
Those familiar with Nova Scotia understand the austere beauty of this Canadian landscape, with its wide open skies and rugged terrain pushing up against the Atlantic. MacKay-Lyons's work responds to this unique topography and to the vernacular building traditions that define its communities. His houses, commercial buildings, and public projects combine regional forms with local materials, technologies, and building practices to create works that are linked to their environments right down to their DNA. Peaked gables, shed roofs, and sliding doors are inspired by local barn types; corrugated metal cladding comes from the buildings used by the area's fishing industry; structural wooden frames are based on local ship-building traditions. These elements communicate a sense of place that is sophisticated, accessible, and free of sentimentality. Novelist and historian Malcolm Quantrill weaves together an intimate portrait of MacKay-Lyons and his work, elucidating the "peculiar regionality" of his subject's architecture.

Résumé:
Malcolm Quantrill made his first visit to Finland half a century ago as a young student from the University of Liverpool, England. Since 1983 Quantrill has published six books on Finnish modern architecture and, in recognition of his contributions to architectural history and theory, he has been the Distinguished Professor of Architecture at Texas A+M University in the USA since 1986. Quantrill and Mäkinen have collaborated since 1987, one result being Quantrill's book in honour of Academician Reima Pietilä, One Man's Odyssey in Search of Finnish Architecture (1988). Matti K. Mäkinen is a prominent Finnish architect who served as Director General of the National Board of Public Building from 1985 until 1994. He has published several books and articles on architecture and urban design. Professor Mäkinen is a former President of The Finnish Association of Architects SAFA and an honorary member of the professional institutes of architects in the USA (FAIA) and in Hungary (MÈSZ). Here the authors engage in dialogues as they explore the present state of architecture and its culture. Under such headings as The Balthusian Dilemma, Stealing a Gem, Heroes and Statues, The Elephant and the Butterfly, they address their theme of The Unmade Bed of Architecture.

Résumé:
"The architectural project" considers the practice of architectural design as it has developed during the last two centuries. In this challenging interpretation of design education and its effect on design process and products, Argentinean scholar Alfonso Corona-Martínez emphasizes the distinction between an architectural project, created in the architect's mind and materialized as a set of drawings on paper, and the realized three-dimensional building. Corona-Martínez demonstrates how representation plays a substantial role in determining both the notion and the character of architecture, and he traces this relationship from the Renaissance into the Modern era, giving detailed considerations of Functionalism and Typology. His argument clarifies the continuity in the practice of design method through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a continuity that has been obscured by the emphasis on changing goals instead of design procedures.
