Both colourful and monotone and always highly detailed, these cartographic excursions are a fine lesson in liberation from objective rigidity.

It’s hard to summarise the work of artist – or as he has suggested it ‘drawer’ – Nigel Peake because there is so much of it and it’s varied. Nigel, who grew up in Ballytrustan (County Down) and currently lives between there and Paris, originally studied architecture in Edinburgh for six years and in 2013 lived in Switzerland for a period to teach an architectural studio. In the past 10 years he’s written and drawn 50 books, published by Princeton Architectural Press, Yvon Lambert or by himself. His work is based on places he has visited.

Résumé:
Nigel Peake produces meticulous hand-drawn maps and obsessively detailed pencil illustrations. Architecture plays a prominent role in his work, as is also the case with ‘There’, the result of his spending a month in an apartment in Paris while working on a series of drawings. There he soon found another drawing project when looking outside the apartment’s windows, a yard that was in fact inaccessible to him. The yard was always devoid of people, so he began to draw it using blue pencil. Each picture is a fragment of the whole, interpretations and perspectives that can be pieced together, interchanged, or float freely without context. The book includes a twelve-page insert with texts.

Résumé:
'Go field and towers' is the result of the conversations that occurred in studios taught by Guillaume Othenin-Girard and Nigel Peake between 2012-2014 as part of the first-year course in architectural design directed by the Atelier de la Conception de l’Espace (ALICE) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). By the nature of tutorials, their conversation would often stray to other fields – academic and artistic and in-between. As they worked on this book, they invited guests to make contributions, some of which appear as short essays, others as notes from a conversation.
