Élu designer de l’année 2005 au Salon Maison (Paris), Patrick Norguet fait figure d’électron libre du design français. Titulaire d’un CAP de dessin industriel et de tournage fraisage, diplômé de l’ESDI, son approche du design industriel se caractérise par la connaissance des matériaux, des outils de production et des processus de fabrication. Il se fait connaître en 1996 en réalisant l’identité visuelle de Louis Vuitton. Depuis 1998, il travaille en indépendant et répond tout d’abord aux commandes de Dior, Guerlain ou Lanvin. Mais c’est en 1999 qu’explose sa renommée, quand Capellini édite sa Rainbow chair en plexiglas coloré et en fait un des produits phares de sa collection.

Exhibitions, platform events and publications track graphic design and boost its development. They enable designers and enthusiasts to keep tabs on recent experiments in the discipline and to appreciate the work of its stellar exponents. Indeed the public at large is starting to acquire an affinity and a feel for this strand of graphic culture. Tapping this trend, graphic design is still an applied art with the ability to cross over into other creative approaches and other cultures. British pop culture and musical genres are good examples of this. Vaughan Oliver is one of the graphic designers to have been spotted and then elevated to stardom for their work with a label, band or publication. Yet the picking-out of an individual style or attitude must not let us forget, and must not mask, the fact that the quality of such graphic output stems primarily from its complementarity with its subject. For Blue Note or 4AD, beautiful sleeves weren’t vital; the music and editorial project took pride of place. A lesser talent of the designers behind the artwork was to grasp this state of affairs and act accordingly. Peer recognition is relatively secondary, though it has the merit of underscoring excellence – and, even better, the exacting quest for the finest possible result.

Pour le quatrième titre de la collection «Emergence», consacrée à la jeune création, les éditions Pyramyd ont souhaité aborder l'univers de l'architecture. Un jury de professionnels, présidé par Claude Parent et composé de Gilles de Bure, Matali Crasset et Francis Rambert, a été invité à sélectionner 26 jeunes architectes européens issus des agences les plus dynamiques du moment. Destiné aussi bien aux professionnels qu'aux néophytes, le livre est conçu comme une immersion dans la création architecturale. Chaque projet fait l'objet d'un descriptif qui explique les principales contraintes à l'origine de l'étude et donne ainsi les clés pour apprécier la démarche des architectes.
